The Orem House. 450 South 500 East. Shelley.

The best part of the old house was the laundry shoot. When we first moved in and were small enough, we would try to shimmy our way down the hole. I don't remember a single success, but I do remember getting stuck alot.

The original carpet was really funny. It was bright blue in the upstairs, brown downstairs, and the office had a bright orange carpet that had little hills all over it.

I have this terrible memory of the bunk beds that we slept it. Once, when I was on the bottom and Laurie on the top, we had a fight. We both retreated to our own beds where I developed a plan of revenge. I decided that If I put my feet on the board above me and pushed, it would scare her. But when I pushed the wooden slat came up and out of where it lay and I found myself holding up the board, mattress, and Laurie up with my legs underneath. I knew that If I moved, I would get squashed to death. So I screamed and screamed and Laurie cried. I don't remember how I got out of the situation (maybe I was squashed and sent to the hosptial with a concussion?) I also frequently got caught between the top mattress and the wall when I was trying to get down on the wrong side. I don't know why I was going down on the wrong side. But it was traumatic when I got stuck.

We had a small hill on one side of the house that we used to go sledding on. Only there was a wobbly leaning wire fence that we would roll up when we weren't using it. Often, this fence had been up when it snowed and was difficult to move. So we decided to go sledding without putting the fence away. Usually we just banged into it at the bottom but Laurie once slid underneath it and was caught by her neck under this wire fence. She cried but I remember just laughing! We also often slid right into the window wells or into the sharp rocks at the bottom of the hill.
